motion capture
WHY: After decades navigating the demands of client-driven advertising, Hotchkiss sought a medium that moved, quite literally. At his Newberry and Beacon Street apartments, he discovered that mobiles—suspended sculptures that dance in the air—required a blend of skills he naturally possessed. This serendipity set him on a path from static visuals to dynamic sculptures, transforming spaces with the gentlest of air currents.
WHAT: Having spent over 40 years perfecting the craft of kinetic sculptures, Joel Hotchkiss creates both indoor and outdoor mobiles that enchant with their effortless grace. His works are a study in balance, motion, and aesthetic harmony, requiring meticulous consideration of scale, texture, and color.
WHERE: Nationally recognized, his mobiles hang in prestigious settings including the San Francisco MOMA and the Guggenheim Museum in NYC. Joel’s journey with mobiles starts in his studio in West Stockbridge, MA, but his creations will soon appear at Ten Easy Street.
